Dear All,
The school year has come to an end and the children now have two months of holiday. On behalf of the children, parents, and our small team, we would like to let you know that your help is extremely appreciated and valued. Thank you! Your contribution has made this happen and we wouldn’t have succeeded without you.
At the end of June, Giordana and Abebech organized a lunch for the children and parents participating in Education for Hope. It was, for everyone involved, an exhilarating experience because it brought Giordana and Abebech closer to the parents and children. The parents were thankful for what we are doing and they were expressing their most heartfelt and honest gratefulness to everyone involved in our project.
The meeting took place on a sunny day and, since the electricity went out, they sat in the restaurant’s veranda. After lunch, Giordana and Abebech spoke to the children’s parents about their children and their circumstances. Unfortunately, it started to rain and everyone began going home. Before they all went their separate ways, they had the chance to take a group picture.
We wanted to share with you some of the interviews Giordana and Abebech did with the parents of the children:
Name- Abebe Age – 6
It was interesting to meet the father of Abebe. He is 72 years old while is wife is 32. He used to be in the military man and now lives off his pension. He probably doesn’t get more than 5 Euros a month and he is very grateful for our contribution in raising his son Abebe.
Abebe is doing well in school and he will be attending the same school next year.
Name- Danawit Age 12
Asnakech has 3 children of her own and is also raising 2 of her sister’s children. Her husband is a baker but is out of work at the moment. She told us that she has another sister who is helping her until she finds a job. We were impressed that even though she doesn’t have enough for herself and her children, she helps her sister who has less than her.
She wants to keep her children in the same school next year.
Name- Yematawork Age 8 Estifanos Age 7
We have known about these two children from the beginning of our journey with Education for Hope. Their mother is mentally ill and she hadn’t seen her children for the past few years. Last month she came to their house in terrible conditions. It was so bad that the children and the aunt did not want to talk about it. One day, the mother decided to leave and the children didn’t take it well. We are thankful that their aunt is looking after them.
They are doing well in school and plan on continuing to attend.
Name—Yared Age 6
Yared’s mother works as a day laborer carrying stones for 14 Euros a month. As one can imagine, this is a particularly hard job for a woman. Yared is doing well in school and their mother is proud.
Name - Wengel Age 3
The minute we walked into the restaurant, the first person we saw smiling and thanking us for what we are doing was this woman. Not only did she arrive early, but she also brought along the principal of the school with her. When we asked her why, she said, “In case I got lost. I did not want to miss this. Nobody in my life has ever done anything for me.”Her girl is very sweet. She is doing well in school and will be staying at the Biniam Vital Academy.
Name Selamawit Age 13
Selamawit has always been a shy girl who had trouble talking to people. She also suffered a lot from her father’s death. Now we noticed that she is more open and excited to be among us. She is doing well in school.
The yearly fee for supporting one child remains € 70 for the next school year: 2010-2011.
